Late summer brings back cranes, and it also brings perennial flowers. Brightly colored flowers like the yellow cosmos pictures here, coneflowers, and cleome. (The background here looks like annual red salvia.) Inevitably, of course, colorful flowers attract butterflies.

As summer wanes, residents of this area look forward to the renewal of crane season as these remarkable migratory birds begin to head south. The voice of a crane calling early in the morning is always a treat.
