Much Ado About Nothing

Northern Wild Flowers -- Oxeye (Marguerite) Daisy

“The splendor of the rose and the whitness of the lily do not rob the little violet of its scent nor the daisy of its simple charm. If every tiny flower wanted to be a rose, spring would lose its loveliness.” ~ Therese of Lisieux

To get from the US Highway to the cottage where we are currently vacationing, we take a road that passes several fields full of daisies that look almost exactly like this ... snow-like drifts of flowers among the tall summer grasses. Sometimes interspersed with hawkweed, buttercups, and lead plant, oxeye or marguerite daisies are almost everywhere right now, from the fields to the roadsides. Simple charm, indeed.

With little here to do or see
Of things that in the great world be,
Sweet Daisy! oft I talk to thee,
For thou art worthy,
Thou unassuming commonplace
Of Nature, with that homely face,
And yet with something of a grace
Which Love makes for thee! ....

~ William Wordsworth (To the Daisy)

 Galaxies

Although the skies are clear and dark where I am, and I could see the Milky last night, I didn't quite see this. I found this in The New York Times, but I thought it was worth sharing anyway.

Here I am, I'm sitting alone again
I'm staring up at the sky
Which at this lonely moment is my only friend
Suddenly as I gaze upon the night
I notice the stars began to shake and dance
Looks like they wanna fight

No way ... they were dancing.
They were romancing.

Falling in love all over.

 Northern Wildflowers

Hello from Vacationland. As I write this, I am sitting in a glorious cottage great room with its windows thrown open, looking out over sparkling water, listening to birds calling and poplar leaves rustling in the gentle wind, while sipping a cup of herbal tea. I'm drinking hot tea because it's only about 60 degrees here with partly overcast skies. There was a little sprinkling of rain this morning as I drove northwards, making it seem more like April or May than late June. But I love this kind of weather for a Northwoods vacation because it is such a welcome change from the heat and humidity where I live, and in this case especially because the agenda includes a lot of reading.

I also had decided that I would spend some of the time identifying wild flowers. When my daughter showed me that she had brought her own identification books for both wild flowers and birds, I was brought nearly to tears at the thought of how close we are, even in thought, and what a lovely, gentle young woman she has become.

As we were unpacking, I looked past the end of the driveway and noticed a tall blue spiked flower just past its prime. I walked over to examine it and was delighted to discover it was a lupine ... a blue one, at that, almost identical to the image above. If you've read any of my nonsense before, you may know that I love blue flowers best, and that the lupine has special meaning for my daughter and me. In a way, lupines are symbolic of my daughter's dream of becoming an artist.

As auspicious beginning for our vacation, indeed.

 Northern Star

I am constant as the northern star,
Of whose true-fix'd and resting quality
There is no fellow in the firmament.

 Violet Moon

Leave this world behind
We'll have a drink and toast to ourselves
Under a violet moon
Tudor rose with her hair in curls
Will make you turn and stare
Try to steal a kiss at the bridge
Under a violet moon
Raise your hats and your glasses, too
We will dance the whole night through
We're going back to a time we knew
Under a violet moon ....

Fortuneteller what do you see
Future in a card
Share your secrets, tell them to me
Under a violet moon ....
